Bat

Most people seem to recognize the bats of Gloomveil as no different from their own homelands. Gloomveil's bats have thick, stocky legs and gripping toes, used for grabbing onto baby Rock Spiders. The spiders are lifted into the air and dropped upon the rocks, a technique used by Fog Vultures on full-sized Rock Spiders. Fallen spiders are then feasted upon. Gloomveil's bats have no eyes, merely folds in their short-furred skins where eyes would be. The saliva of the bats is a dangerous acid, but is only used to dissolve the bats' fallen prey. The bats can be found in all areas of the Gloom, although generally come out of hiding only during High Tides of the Fog.

Feral Dog

These wild dogs roam in small packs in the lands around the Giant's Staircase as well as the Barrows. We suspect that their natural habitat is somewhere atop or beyond the Barrow Cliff, for they are seldom seen, but often heard howling at the moon. The dogs are either descended from wolves, or associate with wolves. Packs of the creatures have been seen attacking Fog Vulture nests in the Cliffs.

Forest Dog

Forest dogs are squirrel-like creatures that posess the ability to leap very long distances.

Lizard

Two types of lizard are known to exist in Gloomveil. The first, sandy brown in colour, loves dry conditions, and is found in the numerous small caves of the Barrow Cliffs. The second, pale gray in colour, loves the damp, and is found in the swamps, most motably Restless Hollow.

Rat

Unfortunately, the rats of Gloomveil are as common as those of the Old Country. The bite of a rat is often infectious, and can cause fever. The bite of a larger rat - and we have seen some rats as large as a dog - can kill a man within days.

Swamp Leech

Swamp Leeches are commonly found in the bogs and damp areas of Restless Hollow. Measuring slightly larger than one's hand, the leeches seem to be able to feed on both plant and animal juices, slowly draining their prey of life-essence. The leeches will attach themselves to any warm body at rest, but we have learned to avoid them by elevating our sleeping palettes. The Gloomveil leeches have some medicinal use, much like the leeches of the Old Country.

Tortoise

A resident of Restless Hollow and other swamps, the Gloomveil tortoise has a bluish-green shell that reflects light as beetle wings do. Their eggs are similarly opalescent. We are considering hunting the tortoise, which seem plentiful enough in numbers to suppport poaching.
