Gloomveil Neverwinter Nights Server Readme
This campaign has been 3 years in the making as of late 1999, powered
by the creative engine of Tony
Walsh. We've had some excellent contributors over
the years, and hope to see a high quality of
player on the NWN server.

1. The Server
1a. Game Schedule
The server is currently up and running a few times a week. We use Neverwinterconnections.com for scheduling. Please register there for up to the minute information on the server schedule. It's an easy registration, and the service is very good. Click here to view upcoming games.
[top of page][top of section 1]
1b. Server IP/ Browser Location
The server will normally be set up in "Role Playing" under "The World of Gloomveil." The IP address for "Direct Connect" will be posted on the Neverwinter Connections game page prior to the game starting.
[top of page][top of section 1]
1c. Server Specs
The server is a P4 1.7Ghz, 512MB RAM, on a DSL connection (3.0mpbs down / 640kbps up). The server is running Win2K.

1d. Server Stability
The server may crash. It is not likely to crash, but it might. Crashes can result from either the server setup or the NWServer application itself. I have no control over the latter. If the server crashes, it will be rebooted and be back online within about 5 minutes of the crash. The server is currently not auto-saving, so your position in the module previous to the crash will not be saved.
If you have difficulty logging into the server, please allow about 30 seconds before you try again. The biggest load on the server occurs when a person first logs in. When 18 people are all trying to log in at once (and keep trying), the server can't handle the strain and crashes. Once everyone is logged in, we seem to be fine.

2. What you can Expect from Gloomveil
2a. Module Status
Progress on additional areas, functionality, and NPCs is constantly underway. These features will be revealed as they are completed. Areas which are locked may either be incomplete (not likely), or the owners of the area are simply "not at home." Please report technical and gameplay issues to the Discussion Area thread entitled "Report Technical and Gameplay Issues Here".

2b. Game Philosophy
Gloomveil is about interaction, exploration, and collective storytelling. There are numerous characters to discover, thousands of words of text to read, and over 25 areas to explore. Gloomveil is not an "amusement park," a "game show," nor a "hack'n'slash" campaign. You are as much a contributor to the enjoyment of Gloomveil as the world's creator, and lead DM, Tony Walsh... so if you're looking to sit back and be entertained, to rack up experience points through countless battles, to hoard piles of treasure, you might be better off on another game server.

2c. Don't know what to do?
If you're bored, lost, or confused in Gloomveil, go through the following checklist:
- Have you interacted with all the player characters?
- Have you interacted with all the NPCs? Are you sure?
- Have you been to all the areas? If not, were some of them too dangerous to explore? Maybe you should find some help.
- Have you read all of the books in the Library?
- Are you aware of the different factions in Gloomveil? Not everyone is on the same side.
- What motivates your character? Try to find ways to accomplish your goals by interacting with other players and NPCs.
If you've done all of the above, and are still bored, please let us know how we can improve the game for you. It's not really our goal to make sure you're entertained, but we'll hear what you have to say.

2d. Gameplay Tips
Gloomveil is a roleplaying-heavy world. Socializing and exploration are much larger parts of the equation than combat and treasure-hunting. Please take time to prepare a character with depth, and get to know your fellow players in game.
Roleplaying will be brutally enforced. Players who insist on disruptive or inappropriate behaviour will be booted or banned.
Please don't "Shout" unless it is absolutely necessary. Please select "Party" or "Talk" when addressing those around you. If you have something to say out of character, preface your speech with "OOC" -- i.e. "OOC- There is a serious bug in this area, can I get a DM over here plase?"
[top of page][top of section 2]
2e. Session Timing
The first 10 - 15 minutes of each session will be devoted to getting items and rewards to characters. Please use this time to do whatever you like, just keep in mind the DMs will be busy flitting about and handing out assigned items.
Please try and watch the clock during game play. The last 15 minutes of the session will be used to try and wrap things up, so this is a perfect time to come down off of your berserk rage and have an ale in the inn.

2f. Getting DM Assistance
Tony Walsh is the lead DM for the Gloomveil module. While he will be in attendance for a majority of the server's uptime, please do not monopolize his time. If you have an important issue, you may contact a DM on the "DM Channel" (in the same menu as Shout, Party, and Talk). For minor issues, it's possible you can ask one of your fellow players out of character.
If you are experiencing a crippling game play issue, please bring it to the attention of a DM and wait patiently for help.
If you are experiencing disruptive play by other players, please ask them to stop. If they do not stop, please bring it to the attention of a DM and wait patiently for help.

3. People are People
3a. Your Character
Please come to Gloomveil with a well thought-out character. You need to invent a reason why your character came to Gloomveil. You need to have some strong ideas about what makes your character tick. If you don't know why your character is in Gloomveil, nor what your character is interested in, you're not going to enjoy yourself.
Please fill out your character bios on the Gloomveil server. Without a character bio, we are not able to see what your character looks like (via "Examine"), and interactions with your character will be less interesting as a result.
[top of page][top of section 3]
3b. Other Player Characters
Do you know your fellow travellers? No? Then why are you travelling with them? Please take the time to RP with your peers. It just doesn't make any sense for a group of complete strangers to get together and go adventuring without getting to know each other first.
Another point to make here is that assuming all players are on the same side can be foolhardy. Just because you're a player doesn't mean you're a hero. Some players have villainous characters.
[top of page][top of section 3]
3c. NPCs
Non-player characters have as much right to live as you do. Similarly, some have nearly as much personality as you do... and some can get offended under the right circumstances. If you persist in offending some NPCs, they will become hostile. If you try to pick their pockets, rummage through their posessions, or "go behind the counter", they may object. You have been warned.
Some NPCs will be posessed by the DM on occasion. During these times, you will not be able to generate a standard conversation by clicking on them. Instead, you must type out your dialog. Whenever an NPC's scripted conversation is active, they are being controlled by the game's AI alone. That's not to say a DM isn't watching, however...

4. Cause and Effect
4a. Encounters and Danger
Gloomveil is a harsh world. Don't expect to be able to beat all of your opponents by brute force. Some must be avoided.
As a player, you will encounter creatures of varying strength, regardless of your level. As in real life, the challenges you face in Gloomveil do not scale to suit your skills. If something is too difficult to defeat alone, perhaps you should find some friends. Certain areas are prowled by creatures tougher than you. If that makes an area unexplorable for you, you'll have to find a way to get what you want (either wait until you're a higher level, or find some friends).
[top of page][top of section 4]
4b. Death
There is a rather harsh penalty for dying. You could lose enough XP to drop down to a lower level. This means that you will not only have to pick your battles very carefully, but you'll have to find friends, forcing an emphasis on grouping and roleplaying.
Just as players can respawn (swept up by the Fog of Gloomveil), NPCs may do so as well. Be careful who you kill, as they might return with revenge in mind.
[top of page][top of section 4]
4c. Experience
Gloomveil's XP system is set at a low level, which means you won't get very far by pure combat alone. Good roleplaying can also get you XP bonuses, either through scripted quests, dialogs with NPCs, or awarded by the DM.
Gloomveil uses a "Reward Token" system in special cases in order to reward good roleplaying or in-character accomplishments. These rewards are normally given out by NPCs, but players can give theirs to other players if they like.
Reward Tokens currently come in Minor, Medium, and Major values (50, 100, or 250XP respectively).
In order to "cash in" a token, it must be taken to any of several objects in the game where a character can reflect on their deeds (these objects are clickable, and are only activated if you have a Reward Token in your posession). The character receives their XP bonus, and the token is destroyed when the object is clicked. -- NOTE: The scripts used to control this are currently breaking in multiplayer games. They have been disabled for now, so you will have to ask a DM to give you XP in exchange for your Tokens.

5. After a Game Session
5a. Feedback About Your Player Experience
We want to know what you thought about the session you played in. There are a number of ways you can give us feedback:
On NeverwinterConnections, you can rate the DMs, and rate the server, as well as add comments.
On this site, you can share your thoughts in the Discussion Area.
Without input from the players, Gloomveil can't improve. We consider all feedback, even negative comments, so please put in your two cents.
[top of page][top of section 5]
5b. Character Reports
After each game session, you can email the lead DM (tony@gloomveil.com) with a report on anything noteworthy your character became involved with last game. Point-form is preferred. In order to continue a realistic, ongoing campaign, we need to know significant events, discoveries, or meetings your character was involved with. Again, you can keep it brief, just quickly jot down a few things that stick in your mind.
Please put "Character Report, NameOfSession: YourCharacterName" in the subject line of the email. e.g. "Character Report, GV04: Sir Robin".
[top of page][top of section 5]
5c. Trade Reports
After each game session, you can email the lead DM (tony@gloomveil.com) with a trade report. The 'trade' system supposes that your character will find a means to gain experience and money while in Gloomveil. Trades are anything appropriate to your character, such as hunting, mining, scribing, tailoring, etc. You can invent anything you like (for now) as long as it makes a little bit of sense. In the future I will be devising a list of possible trades that make the most sense in the context of Gloomveil. The actual performing of the trade is not done during a normal game session (unless you want to roleplay tailoring, hunting, etc). It is assumed that during your stay in Gloomveil you are able to expand your experience (XP) and gain a little spending money (GP). Your report outlines what you did between the last session you played and the upcoming session.
Email tony@gloomveil.com with your report. Please put "Trade Report, NameOfSession: YourCharacterName" in the subject line of the email. e.g. "Trade Report, GV04: Sir Robin".
