TVO Civics 101 Blog

Format: Online Media.

Date: On or around Thursday, November 04, 2010

TVO "Civics 101" producer Michael Lehan interviews Tony Walsh about game-based learning in his blog article "Learning in virtual worlds."

    Excerpt:

For Tony Walsh, using a video game as an education tool is a radical step in human development, but also a very natural one, connected to our basic social behaviours.

“Learning by doing is universal. It has a far higher retention rate than any other kind of learning,” Walsh explains.

“It explains the growing importance of game-based learning.”

Video games are simulations of reality. Actions performed in game can emulate actions performed in reality. According to studies, the retention rate is the same. But the virtual reality of video games can be altered to focus the experience, removing the unnecessary bombardment of information that distracts from the learning experience.

"So now we have yet another level of tedious bureaucracy to Second Life." Others wondered whether the court would have any teeth to back up a judgement, or even what would happen if a Linden (a character played by an employee of Linden Lab) was the target of a case.
