  Don’t Eat Your Crayons

Am I the only one who thinks that making Crayola-branded frozen desserts is a bad idea? If I had to guess, I'd say there's a 100% likelihood of some kid eating at least one Crayon because they thought "Jazzberry Jam" would taste just like the popsicle.
  DS Pics Revealed?

If's Nintendo DS pics can be believed, the latest (and possibly most pointless) of Nintendo's handhelds has subscribed to the "full circle" rule of design, where everything comes back around eventually. Everyone knows the whole brushed-metal, angular look was cool in the 80s. The DS appears to be an embarrassing throwback. The PSP wins in the looks department.
  FlashMX2004’s Dividing Line

I've been using Flash since version 3, but as a designer/animator, not a programmer. Despite lacking code skills, I've been able to squeeze basic button functionality and other mundanities out of Flash over the years, thanks to a "novice" mode in Flash's programming window. Imagine my dismay when I discovered my newly-purchased copy of FlashMX 2004 doesn't seem to support novice programmers the way previous versions did. Aside from code hints, there are no easily-plugged-in fields--or if there are, I'm too novice to find them.

Assuming there is indeed no novice-mode, I have to wonder about the Macromedia's strategy here.

  Girls Advance Games

If any significant change is going to sweep over video games, it'll likely be as a result of greater involvement from women. If more women were recruited by game developers, games might not be so painfully nerdy. But what choices would female game developers make?

According to, a camp for grade-school game designers resulted in a fifth-grade all-girl team coming up with "Dr. Evil Stinky and the Poison Cake... a light-hearted game that involved communicating with aliens through barter and compromise to achieve the desired result." Evil and stinky? Count me in! On the flipside, a team of fifth-grade boys come up with the uninspiring Virus Fighters: The Defeat of Juppa, where "...Juppa was a direct threat to the player, a villain who went around defeating people with viruses. There were a few different main characters to choose from, including two females who were both described as 'bad-tempered.' Everyone had a sword..."

Let's hope the first ever Women's Game Conference this fall can inspire the industry and bolster female developers. I'd really like to see Dr. Evil Stinky and the Poison Cake get made some day.

  Dinc! Free Font Feast

It appears that the formerly-commerical Dinc! type foundry has gone freeware. Dinc! is offering over 90 Mac and PC True Type fonts (many of which I've used over the years) for zero dollars: free as in beer. There are a range of styles available, mostly of the retro variety-- these are all for specialty design or illustration work and well worth a browse.

  The More Things Massively Change…

Toronto-based designer Bruce Mau is spearheading another new and large-scale project. This one's loftily entitled "Massive Change." The Massive Change Web site dreams about the future of global design: "We will eliminate the need for raw material, amass intelligence, and banish all waste from manufacturing."

If this is design's future, how does the Massive Change project intend on helping bring it about? Apparently by publishing a book. Which consumes trees (a dwindling resource,) creates chemical waste as a byproduct of printing, and creates material waste in the form of paper once the book is no longer relevant.

According to the project's Web site, contributors to the Massive Change book are not paid. A number of planned exploits exist for the work of contributors, including "a line of product." So what are we left with here? Another attempt to co-opt culture and exercise cheap-labour capitalism under the guise of making massive change. Massive Change? Same old, same old.
  Mobile Mess

Could someone please explain to me why there are about 10 different screen sizes for mobile phones? I'd really like to know what phone-makers were thinking.

On one hand, they want these stunning games, stories, and Web sites on their phones. On the other hand, they can't seem to agree on any standards. This leaves content creators like me in the lurch. If I want to make something as simple as "desktop wallpaper" for a mobile phone, what do I do-- make 10 versions? God forbid I'd actually want to make a game.
