DS Game Content Fueled By Wireless Hotspots

Posted 2007-12-30 by Tony Walsh

Metro Wardive, a homebrew game for the Nintendo DS handheld console, reads the names of surrounding wireless hotspots and converts them into in-game enemies and levels. This allows the game content to change significantly based on the player's real-world location (I can only think of one mainstream game that does this).

Judging by the game's description, it seems that real-world travel is actually encouraged by design (at the very least, new game scenarios are revealed through travel)--with the right game mechanics, Metro Wardive could be used as an incentive for physical activity (walk or run from hotspot to hotspot) or urban exploration. The mind races, even if the feet do not.

‘Xbox Live’ Friends To Be Publicized:  Opt Out If You Like Privacy

Posted 2007-11-26 by Tony Walsh

Microsoft announced via its Gamerscore blog today that as of December 4, 2007, adult members of the Xbox Live gaming service will have their friends lists exposed to the rest of the community. Previously, friends lists were private. Members will automatically be opted in to the new system, and will have to manually opt out if they'd like to keep their friends list protected.

According to Microsoft, Xbox Live members can opt out of the loosened privacy system by visiting an administration page and setting either "Friends Only" access or "Blocked" access. By default, the friends lists of all members aged 18 and up will be set to "Everyone" access. Minors will be disallowed from making their lists open to all, and are automatically given "Blocked" status.

Twitter Application For Facebook: I Don’t Care If You’re ‘Twittering’

Posted 2007-11-02 by Tony Walsh

I've been done with Twitter for about 4 months now. It just didn't gel for me. But for some reason, Facebook status updates were easier to make. Thanks to an update to the Twitter application for Facebook, it's possible to update one's Facebook status through Twitter, killing two birds with one stone--perhaps enough reason to twitter again.

The downside is that Twitter seems to think it's important for people on Facebook to know you've posted from Twitter, adding "is twittering" to your status update. Example:
Stowe Boyd is twittering: Lying in bed this morning, before really awake, I had several good ideas almost at the same time. Odd. Good.
What we have here is information overload in a Facebook status update, and a source of potential confusion for Facebook users who aren't familiar with Twitter: Why is Stowe twittering? What's twittering? Why do we need to know he's twittering instead of doing something else? Bad.

Kaneva To Focus On Platform Over Biz-Dev?

Posted 2007-10-31 by Tony Walsh

Much like Linden Lab has moved to distinguish between Second Life (the experience) and Second Life Grid (the technology platform), Kaneva (the company) seems to be moving towards separating Kaneva (the virtual world experience) from Kaneva the technology platform. Confused? If it's any consolation, I feel like I just drank a pint of whiskey upside-down.

According to an email newsletter I received from Kaneva founder and CEO Christopher W. Klaus, the company will focus on expanding its platform's functionality and toolkit in order to better facilitate partner-developed experiences during the first half of 2008. Partners include IBM (known for being bullish on virtual worlds), Turner Broadcasting (which announced a TV network for Kaneva), and Target (which sells Kaneva currency cards).
