  Bolt Owns Teens
Posted 2003-05-01 by Tony Walsh
Bolt is a massive online community for teens that has weathered both dot-boom and dot-bomb over the years. Its survival shows that whatever Bolt is doing, it's doing it well.

Nestled among Bolt's innumerable community features and tools are the sources of its success: data mining its 7 million users through surveys, quizzes, and polls.

I was reading a recent press release from Bolt, and discovered that in addition to the regular Bolt community-member, there is an uber-member known as the "Bolt Connector." Numbering over 500,000 members, Connectors are described as "Bolt's proprietary group of the most influential teens in America."

Proprietary group. Think about that for a minute. That means Bolt "owns" this group. They're completely commoditized. I wonder what these teens get paid... I wonder how "cool" they'd think it was that Bolt says they're property.

Hey teens: We own you! Here's some coupons you can use in our online store.
  Man-Eating Rats

Rats as big as "fat house cats" have been munching on the flesh of incapacitated, weak, or small human beings of South Africa's Western Cape. "...a survey targeting informal settlements in and around Khayelitsha recently had shown that 72 percent of residents were troubled by rats." Troubled? Yes, I think having your legs chewed off counts as troubled. [source]

Here's why I don't use PayPal. Not only are there a few security glitches, PayPal has a lousy record for dealing with scams and other problems.
