  N-Gage Gets ‘Habbo Hotel’ Connectivity
Posted 2005-10-13 by Tony Walsh
Habbo Hotel, an insanely-popular avatar-based chat service, has made the leap from the web to the Nokia N-Gage mobile device. Habbo honchos Sulake announced today that their new game Habbo Islands will allow the existing Habbo community to embark on "an exotic, fun-filled adventure vacation." While there are 20 "adventures" available on the self-contained island, the killer app for the mobile version of Habbo is its connectivity with Habbo Hotel via an in-game console, allowing friends to chat on the go.

This sort of transmedial access to persistent virtual worlds is potentially more lucrative than developing one-off mobile games. Habbo Island (and other future applications like it) build upon an established property, encouraging greater presence (if not greater immersion) in the virtual world, and fostering potentially greater brand loyalty as a result. Massively-multiplayer games have already established that gamers are willing to pay monthly fees to access their virtual worlds--micropayments for captivating transmedial extensions probably won't be a hard sell.
