  Cooking with Gas
Posted 2003-01-09 by Tony Walsh
The Detroit Project is making people angry with its claims that gas-guzzling SUVs finance terrorism. According to Arianna Huffington, the project's progenitor, many US television stations have refused to carry the ads. She points out that American car manufacturers spend something in the order of $3 billion annually on advertising, so it's not hard to figure out why her ads are objectionable.
  Let them eat Protatos
Posted 2003-01-03 by Tony Walsh
Rich people eat organically-grown foods. Poor people eat GM foods. India's poor may soon be chomping on the GM "Protato":
"Asis Datta's team at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi added the AmA1 gene to potatoes, with the result that they make a third more protein than usual, including substantial amounts of the essential amino acids lysine and methionine." Hmmm, maybe this will make for some giant potato-bugs or something deliciously unexpected...
  McD’s Spin Machine
Posted 2002-12-18 by Tony Walsh
If You Can't Beat 'Em, Pander to 'Em lays out the clever (nauseating) marketing tactics employed by McDonald's in countries outside of North America. My favourite--
"Problem: [Egyptian] Anti-American boycott sparked by U.S. support for Israel.
McSpin: Local outlets introduce the McFalafel, rolled out behind an ad jingle sung by Shabaan Abdel Rahim, best known for his chart-topping hit 'I Hate Israel.'" Nothing like a good round of "I Hate Israel" to make a McFalafel go down smoothly.

Update- Here's an article on Shabaan Abdel Rahim of "I Hate Israel" fame.
  Bye bye, Arctic ice…
Posted 2002-12-09 by Tony Walsh
What an exciting future we have in store for us. "We're experiencing the most rapid increase in temperature in recorded history." [story] See ya later, Arctic. Nice knowing you. We never liked Polar Bears anyway. Except in Coke commercials.
  Disposable Everything
Posted 2002-12-05 by Tony Walsh
contends that the production of disposable goods is on the rise ("...the number of disposable grocery products has more than doubled since 1995.") If true, this is bad news for everyone for what I hope are obvious reasons. [story]

  China to slip one on:
Posted 2002-12-02 by Tony Walsh
Condom ads may soon trumpet the many benefits of protected sex to the Chinese people after a long term ban on such marketing. As the most populated country in the world, AIDS stands to hit China hard-- the U.N. says 10 million Chinese could be infected by HIV by the end of the decade. [story]
  Dress-up Seppuku

Far-East costumes for the young, the old, the ancient, or kinky. It's all there. In a language I cannot read.
  Worst.  Spill.  Ever.
Posted 2002-11-20 by Tony Walsh
I'm sure you've already heard about the spill. "...the resulting damage could be double that caused in the Exxon Valdez disaster off the coast of Alaska in 1989 - one of the worst ever." After leaking a reported 5000 tons of oil into the ocean, the tanker has now sunk to the ocean floor, taking the remaining 70,000 tons (or thereabouts) with it. reports- "Environmentalists fear the heavy fuel oil remaining on the Prestige will now leak out of its submerged tanks, causing massive ecological and financial disaster to the Spanish and Portuguese coasts."
  Throw everything out:
Posted 2002-11-14 by Tony Walsh
Disposable DVDs coming soon to a landfill near you, joining disposable cell-phones, disposable batteries, disposable plastic containers, disposable contact lenses, disposable diapers, disposable cameras, and much much more! It's a disposable planet.
  When dolphins attack:

Not getting enough fish in your diet? Attack the humans who caused your misery. [story]
