Megablog Kotaku broke the news earlier this week that the Slamdance game festival booted Super Columbine Massacre RPG from its competition, subsequently reporting that the decision to eject the controversial game was made personally by Slamdance president Peter Baxter on moral (high)grounds.

The sudden turnaround by Slamdance was naturally perceived as a spit in the eye of freedom by some gamers, including the outspoken Greg Costikyan, who wrote about Super Columbine Massacre RPG "This is not a glamorization of the murderers, nor yet a trivialization of the tragedy; it is a work of serious artistic intent and accomplishment, based on considerable research, that in fact illuminates and reflects the horror of that day. Just as there are novels of the Holocaust, there can be a game of Columbine, and neither need trivialize a tragedy."

Recently, as Water Cooler Games and other sources report, top competitors thatgamecompany (flOw) and Jonathan Blow (Braid) have pulled out of the festival. I'm happy to hear this. It's hard enough to succeed as an indie developer, and so it must have been particularly difficult to make the choice to pull out. I'm glad that these folks have put aside their competitive urge to support one of their peers.
