Chrysler Cars Embedded in ‘The Movies’

A handful blogs have relayed details from a recent Hollywood Reporter story (reprinted here) on a co-sponsored machinima contest entitled "Chrysler in the Movies: Virtual Film Competition." The contest invites aspiring users of filmmaking game The Movies to incorporate a Chrysler car into their entry. The fact that this contest has been launched isn't so remarkable. What is a surprise is that Chrysler cars were embedded in The Movies to begin with, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The presence of built-in Chrysler vehicles might be one more reason why the publisher of The Movies (Activision) and the game's developer (Lionhead) slapped such a restrictive end-user license on the game. Filmmakers could never be allowed to own a film they've made with the included, trademarked Chrysler cars.

I assume entries will be judged based upon their love for the Chrysler brand. I can't see a critique of Chrysler winning anything more than the loathing of the co-sponsors. I think it's fair to say this is not a contest about art, it's a contest about marketing.

Given Chrysler's recent award by AdAge, their acknowledged interest in pursuing these new media marketing channels, and the Chrysler/Jeep branding of Yahoo avatars, I don't even think this is a surprise tbh.

Now if it had been Ford or GM...

I'm surprised Chrysler's integrated branding of The Movies wasn't publicized before now. Perhaps it was, and I missed it (although I doubt it). These deals are usually trumpeted fairly loudly before the game is released--advertising as a "feature" and all that. Seems this one went in stealth.

Here's another deal that slipped under the radar. In 2006, The Movies users "will be able to use their in-game credits on clothing for their characters taken from John Malkovich's designer menswear collection Uncle Kimono" - Of Movies and Malkovitch, Edge Online.
