‘GTA: San Andreas’ Mod Incites Sex Panic
Numerous media outlets are reporting that a user-created modification for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas which supposedly unlocks hidden sex content within the game has prompted an investigation by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Game-modder Patrick Wildenborg created the "hot coffee" mod that he claims merely opens up access to existing sex mini-games. If true, the ESRB could upgrade the Mature rating for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to Adults Only--a category that only a tiny fraction of games falls into, and which retailers are reluctant to sell.

According to the Associated Press (via sfgate.com), David Walsh of the National Institute on the Media and the Family mused "Can you imagine the impact of 13-, 14- and 15-year-old boys literally enacting this [sexual] scene?" Uh, no, sorry. I don't imagine teenage boys in such scenes. Walsh's spicy scenario might be a concern if 13-, 14- and 15-year-old video game nerds could actually get a girlfriend.

Coincidence. I heard about and installed this mod just yesterday. It does provide sex content and the impression I get is that it is indeed unlocked content and not just additional content provided by modders.

Yeah, I don't doubt the modder's claims. I think Rockstar just won't comment on it one way or the other in order to avoid getting themselves in (further) trouble.

I'd be surprised if the game gets an upgraded rating and I imagine the publicity will only improve sales.

Walker is gonna have to dump his PS2 and upgrade his PC :D

Thx Neal -- I was reading somewhere today that the actor who supplied the motion-capture for GTA:SA's main character denies having performed any simulated sex acts. Of course anyone in a mocap suit could have done it.

My guess is that Rockstar is going to pin the Hot Coffee content on a small group of workers within the GTA:SA dev team. They'll have to explain how anyone in the dev team had so much time on their hands as to come up with the hidden content. Many game industry workers are working in sweatshop conditions.

"Gunjar Chaudhuri is a 16-year-old migrant worker in India's capital, Surat. Every day, arriving at work sometimes as early as 11am, Gunjar is paid a pittance to thrust and pump his hips for Rockstar..."

Ok, not *those* kind of sweatshop conditions :)

Although outsourcing motion-capture isn't a bad idea... I think we could use some Bollywood-style dance-moves in video games.
