Major League Gaming Comes to American TV
Posted 2006-04-17 by Tony Walsh
Major League Gaming, an organization that makes the dubious claim of being the first professional video game league, will be appearing on American TV through the USA Network this year. The first event in the league's "Pro Circuit" takes place April 21-23, at the Meadowlands in Secaucus, New Jersey, and will pass through Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The playoffs will be held this fall in Chicago, with National Championships held in Las Vegas. Over $800,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winning teams.

I'm not convinved MLG intends to expand game culture's influence here as much expand its leadership opportunities in the competitive-gaming arena. Furthermore, the timing of this announcement and naming choice of the league is a bit odd. At the beginning of the year, DIRECTV announced pending coverage of professional gaming with its Massive Gaming League. DIRECTV carries the USA Network. So, is DIRECTV's Massive Gaming League the same as Major League Gaming, or are the MGL and MLG competitors? The mind boggles.
