  Massive Still Hyping Game-Ad Realism

Massive Incorporated dynamically inserts real-world advertisements into game worlds. The single benefit to game players, as Massive has insisted all along, is that embedded ads increase the amount of realism in a game. According to a recent article published by The Hollywood Reporter, Massive marketing officer Nicholas Longano said "The reality of the game is essential at all costs." Longano cited Anarchy Online as a suitable locale for Massive's real-world ad placement. You might agree with him if you thought an ad for Motley Crue displayed in a far-future, alien sci-fi setting was realistic.

If the reality of a game was really of paramount importance to Massive, the company would limit its advertising to real-world settings such as sports games, but it's unlikely that any game is a truly suitable vehicle for "realism." Games are an abstraction of reality, not an accurate representation of it.
