Susan Wu of Charles River Ventures informed me today that game virtuoso Raph Koster has formally announced his new company, dubbed "Areae." Wu says "Areae sits at the intersection between Web 2.0 and MMOGs... I predict that the successful online communities in the future will continue to more strongly resemble MMOGs."

The company launched stealthily back in July, but has since been funded by Charles River Ventures. Lead by Koster and fellow MMO-veteran John Donham, Areae has a killer lineup of advisors straddling the gaming and social software spaces. Other than promising to create the "next gen of virtual worlds," I don't quite know what Areae has in store for us--or even how to pronounce the name--but the company is hiring a couple of programmers and an artist. Hopefully, the company's official web site will soon be updated to communicate exactly what products or services it intends to offer--currently there isn't much to comment on.
