  Cross-Reality Banking Ramps Up
Posted 2007-01-10 by Tony Walsh
Players of Entropia Universe will soon be able to bid on the acquisition of 2-year banking licenses bridging the Entropia and real-world banking systems. According to Entropia-developer MindArk, banks in their game will be set up to collect interest through loans. Successful bidders will be afforded the opportunity to help design and name their own virtual bank buildings, and offer banking services directly through avatars. Early last year, MindArk established ATM cards for exchanging currency between Entropia and real-world banks.

Meanwhile, ATMs are currently in third-party development for Second Life, according to's Lukas Chadbourne, who reports that Crystal Studio has partnered with "at least two international banks" for the project. The Canadian firm is reportedly in the first phase of testing the ATMs, which will allow Second Lifers to "buy or deposit [Linden Dollars] straight into their real bank account..." My recollection is that a number of virtual banks have been launched in Second Life over the years, but none have interfaced directly with real-world banks (and I'm pretty sure none were long-term successes).
