‘Second Life’ Surpasses 1 Million Accounts

Over a million users have created accounts in the virtual world of Second Life to date. The milestone was reached some time today, meeting expectations Second Life's maker Linden Lab set at the end of last year. At that time, I had quite incorrectly guessed that competing world There would wither (it has since resurged), and avatar-based chatspace IMVU would threaten Second Life's dominance.

At the time of this writing, 1,022,023 accounts have been created to date in Second Life. Approximately 24 hours ago, the population was around the 960,000 mark. That's about 40,000 signups overnight (and for further context, SL's signups were at around 600k last month). Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale attributes the growth to media coverage, and anticipates an additional 50,000 accounts to be created today. Rosedale described the influx, which has resulted in a decrease in the quality of service and experience, as a "crushing signup load" after declaring earlier in the year that his virtual world was "perfectly scalable."
