  Silent Hill:  The Movie
Posted 2003-09-19 by Tony Walsh
Video game horror series "Silent Hill" is destined for big-screen exploitation. The movie will reportedly be produced by Samuel Hadida (True Romance, Spider, Brotherhood of the Wolf) and directed by Christophe Gans (Crying Freeman.) It remains to be seen whether or not a movie could be any scarier than the game series. I'm betting it won't be.

Although the movie will not be scarier then the game, I hope it does come close. It should a least have a scary story line, what will be the story line anyway?

If there's one thing the movie could do better than the game, it'd be a good storyline. The story in the game is a little convoluted, and I'm guessing a movie script will be a lot more coherent. But yeah, what would the movie plotline be?

I have played ever silent hill game.... The movie won't be as scary as the game.... but I hope it will come close.... I hope that it has the same spine tingling music, the same thick fog, and the same atmosphere the games had...

and a question... who will star as the main character... I don't know if Mila (Jovovich) is up for this one... seeing as this is probably beyond her talent.

Silent Hill is an awesome game, there are a few things i really want to see, The school really freaks me out so does the insane asylum inside the hospital so i hope that appears in the movie, i also hope the dead puppet nurses and doctors that appear in the first game, those bloody humps on their backs are sooooooo creepy, and also i know that the storyline will follow the same storyline as silent hill, the first game

This movie will probably be a classical videogame-movie flopp!
If we look at how many movies based on games made we all know that non of them would ever get nominated for an award.
"But" this of all games has a serious, more brutal and "real"(The fact of blood, misshaped humans, the face of a baby on a ... you get the point) storyline compared to: Streetfighter, Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy, Double Dragon etc. etc.
If they can get the same nervshaking "tiptoe" even paranoid feeling in to this movie it will most sertanley guide it to the audience game-movie movie of choice

I'd like to see a Silent Hill movie as much as the next fan, but I don't really see what it would have to offer, considering that Silent Hill already borrows so many elements from the movie Jacob's Ladder.

According to the IMDB,the Silent Hill movie will be written by Roger Avary and Nicolas Boukhrief; directed by Christophe Gans. It's listed with a 2006 release date, but as an "in production" movie, this doesn't mean much.

If they make a movie they better not screw it up like they did "resident evil apocalypse". Its a great game and could make a great movie if they just stick with the no scare relief factor that every one of the 4 games had.

I am only guessing (according to past mishaps) that the movie will suck. In the perspective of a very good fan of the game, (not the best for I am human) that this film will turn out cloes to flawless. I have seen films that would be the worst, but ended up beautiful. I can say that as 05' crawls ever so slowly towards us, this HAS to be the greatest film from a very respectable game series (exluding 3). I wish that it will not be cursed like the other past VG-2-F ideas.

Silent Hill: The Movie... There's a tough one, at first I thought all Silent Hill games are independent with only the town acting as a bond. But nope, Silent Hill 3 is sequal to Silent Hill and Silent Hill 4 - The Room doesn't even base to the town.
But I guess the movie will have something to do with "the cult", so it'll be related to both 1 and 3. The second game had the best potential for a movie - dead wife, a look-a-like, mystery-girl, hidden-past. There still is one big problem: how to get the same touch to the movie? It isn't the same to watch somebody desperately trying to kill a monster with a piece of wood than doing it "yourself". And I hope there's a lot of unknown actors, famous ones will definetly spoil the movie...

If the people behind the upcoming movie really's been playing the Silent Hill-series and understands it, the movie can be Great and really Scary...
I know two actors that really fits in - Johnny Depp (because he can do everything great) and the blind girl from The Village. Apart from that, the other actors should remain unknown.
I wonder if the people behind the Resident Evil-series was involved in the Resident Evil-movie...If they were, it would definately have been better..=)
The Silent Hill-movie should not offer to much blood and brains...It's all more about the psycological stuff - the things that you don't see. And to make a good atmosphere in a thriller, it should be quit in severeal locations. No "Hollywood-music"! But that's pretty impossible cause Konami's involved in the music procedure, etc....
Silent Hill-the movie can really be good - it has it's qualities, and it has great qualifactions to the big screen, I mean Konami is in the backround....

Well, there can be a lot of blood and brains but it can't explode to your face like in action movies. It should be like in the hospital scene of Jacob's Ladder, which I think was creepy as hell (and proves directly that Silent Hill series has taken a lot from this movie). But there also has to be beautiful but silent scenes to make a big contrast in to the happenings.
One great psychological detail from 1 and 3 is the wheelchair, I suppose you mean that kind of horror? Agreeing, that's what we need...

I just heard about the movie today! Man, I wonder how they are gonna pull it off. But I hope it's good. It better be as freaky and gory and scary as the game. Remember the feeling you had the first time you played each game? I hope it gives the same effect in the movie. Especially with those who never played SILENT HILL! And don't forget the weird noises and the fact that a lot of freaky things that made no sense happened. I want it to be twisted!

They had better not screw this up and turn it into an action movie. Even if its not going to be as scary as the video game (I don't think the censors will allow it anyway), I at least hope they don't rely too heavily on visual effects. To me, the horror of Silent Hill seems to be based on fear and atmospher, letting your imagination run rampant on what is heared but not seen...well till the very last moment when there is little time to react. I also hope that they get a Japanese Director as the style is based more on that than the Hollywood "Oh look there's a monster. Guess I'd better scream". Maybe get the makers of the game to put their input in or help out with the sound at least.

Oh yeah, I agree with Room 302 that Bryce Dallas Howard (blind girl Ivy Walker in the Village). She has that "Heather" look. I wonder if they'll release it when (should it happen) a 5th Silent Hill game comes out. Kind of like where the movie ends the game begins so you have to buy the game in order to see what happens further. Just a thought.

So all we are asking for the public to do is to wait and see !

Are the ratings for the movie real? I heard only the adults that are in good health are allowed to watch it.

To see if Silent Hill would make a worthwhile movie, we should take note of various different factors:
1) What makes the games popular.
2) Imagery.
3) Narriative.

In Game-To-Film issues such as RE, many of the key elements were lost. The whole point of RE was zombies, and the gratuitous violence that came with blowing their heads off. Another key factor was the sense of having to escape from a horrible situation. Both movies did not deal with these central points properly and, as such, were rather terrible, agreed?

Silent Hill 1 was based on many different horror stories (especially Stephen King), artists and base primal fears. Silent Hill 2, as has already been stated, was based on a movie. So, if the movie is made whilst not completely discounting the games but still keeping very close to the origional influences, the actual movie should come out pretty well. In any case, Silent Hill is about imagery, and not entirely inclusion, as all the main characters seem pretty detatched; which will carry over well to a movie format.

I am not much of a Silent Hil fan,but I think the game series is cool especially the 3rd and 4th, that long-haired ghost(Cynthia) was so scary. I really glad that Konami is helping, anyway RE wasn't scary because it is more logical then SH so it's not scary. Please get abit of Silent Hill 3 in it too Konami.Silent Hill 3 scared me so much, I couldn't go to school the next day.

I really hope they will do a good job for Silent Hill movie. I was dissapointed with resident evil because they should of had the Mantion on there. And also Jill,Whesker and Chris in that movie. They need to really wake up and smell the coffee and do it as the game is, Simple as that.

Actually, I'm looking forward to see what kind of movie they can pull out! I'm also kind of nervous that they might screw it up. When a friend told me to play Silent Hill few years ago, I never thought I would become such a big fan. I think they have very little chance to make a good movie, but if they nail it, it will blow our minds!!! So, to the people that are making this film: put your whole heart into it, there are a lot of die-hard Silent Hill fans like me supporting you all the way! Joe McNeil.

I think that the movie should be made by the Japanese producers and director...they are as a nation depressive, pressured and suicidal. No offence. But if you look at the original movies like You-on:the Grudge, Uzumaki, Gozu and similar japanese movies, they have such a tallent for horror movies that dont include alot of straight action scenes, but they concentrate more on anxiety, depression, illness, darknes and they just pound your mental side IN.And I think that Silen Hill should be more of a horror, and less of an action movie.Just look what they did to Resident Evil. And the script...?Why not take that guy that allready wrights Silent Hill Scenarios and stories.Ill bet hes even cheaper then the one they using now.But than again, whoever makes it...ill watch was just a thought.

not to mention that their natality is dropping, cause like 70% of those suicides are done by teenagers?
and that nuclear bomb that destroyed Nagasaki and Hiroshima?
HELLO!they lived through nuclear fallout for Chryst sakes.
Plus, hello kitty freaks me out.Imagine that kitty in an genuine Silent Hill ambient. Its scary!

It seems like I'm just beating a dead horse by saying this but if they do make a movie of Silent Hill, they should have so that most of the design work be done by the orginal creators of the series. It's a given that they should have Akira Yamaoka do the soundtrack; his work is just too unique that the feeling just can't be recreated.

Though I cringe at the thought of the video-game-to-movie mutation/curse taking place with Silent Hill, it must be noted (previously by SuperDuperChaz) that Silent Hill does have inspirations from the strong characteristics of other movies, which may help with the transition. I'm surprised the movie The Cell was not mentioned, taking into account the barrages of phantasmagoric imagery the movie delivered. Though The Cell is not as gritty or hellish as Silent Hill, it must be noted that both are still outlandish and hardly normal. If a movie like The Cell is released, Silent Hill may go well so long as it retains the foundations that made Silent Hill so successful and creepy. I also agree with the addition of a renowned actor or two (hook us with some talent we can trust...Johnny Depp, I'm looking in your direction...PRETTY PLEASE?!) while the rest of the cast is less renowned (but may they rise to fame if they pull off their parts well).

I see there is a lot of fear as to the depreciation of the game's image like in the Resident Evil movies, which I saw and must conclude, they blow aardvark nostral. I would've been much more intrigued if they toned down on the action and focused more on the suspense of plot development. Obviously, slowing the pace down would be a necessary first step. Beyond that, there's nothing much else to complain about - it had all the elements but rushed through them. I don't recall such happening to LOTR and that left a massive impression on the world. Everything was done by the books, literally.

Now to be on topic: Konami has mentioned their involvement through plot review, soundtrack and character/creature design with Silent Hill. Therefore we have much less to be worried about. I'm actually quite optimistic about this game-to-movie transition and, dare I say, downright excited. If Konami sticks with its development, I'm sure there is little to worry about quality.

And who says it can't be as scary? Firstly, I didn't find the games scary nearly as much as they were creepy, and yes, there's a difference. The element that made 'creepy' sufficient is the plot and narration, which were done quite effectively. Where there was only 'creepy' there was added suspense and complexity, and that's probably what could make the word 'scary' come to mind. That in mind, the movie could pull off just the same effect as the games and perhaps better - it's always possible with the right minds behind it.

i can't wait!!

anyways, heard that the writter of the game is making the movie as well, which i think is a smart move.
i know resident evil sucked, it was ok - a good watch, but it sucked. But i think silent hill with the right director and people behind it could be as good as the game [obviously not better].
i agree with personal jesus, Johnny depp should play the main character. I think he just fits the bill and could do this type of movie.
if its not going to follow any of the games original story line then it could prove costly. i think it should re-do silent hill 1 or 2 as i enjoyed them the most.

i can't wait, also i heard the makers of the music for the game is going to be making music for this one! YAS!

I share most of your skepticism, yet there is more potential for this movie than there was for Resident Evil. I believe Christophe Gans showed proved his directorial worth in Brotherhood of the Wolf, at least regarding imagery and tone (which are arguably the most important factors concerning a production like Silent Hill). I hope they do in fact use Akira Yamoaka and Melissa Williamson for the music, Jarin, for music may be the MOST important factor. However, I don't think Johnny Depp will be a candidate as the plot line centers around a female protagonist taking her ill daughter to a healer. She does team up with a cop in Silent Hill, yet I can't see Johnny Depp filling that role, at least not if the P.I. from SH 3 can serve as any template.

The lack of people willing to see that the movie industry is trying to take an interest in what people see is really starting to piss me off.
I (personly) think they are starting to get better. I had low expectations for the Doom movie, but I found that it wasn't all that bad. I was very impressed by the teaser trailer for Silent Hill. So long as they can convey the same feeling of fear and dread that the game put over, I will be estatic. (happy happy happy).
The movie industry is trying to make money. They have already admitted that they make crap. (If only the RIAA would come to the same realization. Remember kids: Political Correctness is the new paranoia)
Like many things, people won't get it right on the first try. It takes time to get the formula right, and to find something that people will like.
I for one, will welcome our new poo inducing movie overlord.
I will give it a chance to scare me, as the game did. To this day, I refuse to play SH in the dark, alone. With out someone. Or teddy.

(please be advised: The opinions expressed are my own, and quite frankly, I couldn't care what anyone else thinks.)

I think that a lot of people who aren't familiar with SH's storyline will not like it. Unlike most horror movies, the entire storyline of SH of isn't fully told. For some parts of the story, you have to figure it out yourself. For example, I don't think the white claudia/PVT drug ring between Dahlia and Kaufman will be in the movie.

Also, after I watched the trailer, I thought that the "Otherworld" doesn't look dark and scary enough.
