The Pew Internet & American Life Project has published a new batch of stats on teens and digital content, based on a survey last year of 1,100 12-17 year-olds and their parents. And the survey says:
  • 21M teens use the internet, and 57% of those "could be considered Content Creators" (remixers, bloggers, web page makers, artists, writers, or videographers).
  • 33% of online teens share their content online
  • 32% claim to have created or contributed to web pages or blogs for others
  • 22% of teens claim to keep their own personal web page
  • 19% of teens say they are bloggers, while 38% say they read blogs
  • 19% of online teens say they remix found digital material into their own creations.
  • 51% of teens say they download music (compared to 18% of adults)
  • 31% of teens say they download video files for ad-hoc viewing
  • 75% of teens believe "Music downloading and file-sharing is so easy to do, it's unrealistic to expect people not to do it."
So much for bombarding kids with anti-downloading propaganda. They're too smart.
